About the Authority Layer

Back to Segni de l’antica fiamma

This about page treats Authority as a reading environment in its own right, not just as an auxiliary panel. It explains how the layer moves from a selected line to canto-wide authority maps, tracked authors, personaggi, work chips, and preserved commentary records.

What This Layer Is

The Authority Layer does not simply collect cited names. It reorganises commentary use into a line-first route: Line for local accountability, Canto Map for canto-wide distribution, and Full Authority Page for author or personaggio rooms. Its job is to make authority usage readable as a navigable tradition rather than as a residue hidden inside record cards.

In practical terms, that means the layer now supports multiple levels of objecthood: record-local work mentions on the selected line, per-canto authority indexes, fully shaped objects such as Aristotle or Virgil, a tracked author universe, and personaggi that can be entered through poem hits, commentary aliases, and local figure bands.

The key design decision is that authority remains anchored to the reading scene. You do not have to leave line, card, or commentary language behind in order to enter authors, works, personaggi, or preserved commentary records.

Current Build Snapshot

Segni de l’antica fiamma exposes tracked authority authors, preserved commentary-source rows, and stable highlightable author lexicon entries.

The point of these numbers is not display. They mark that Authority is no longer a thin experiment: it now has enough mass to justify a distinct reading page and a distinct entry logic.

Tracked Authors

These are the tracked authors accepted into the canonical authority layer. Some are deeper than others, but all of them now enter as ready objects.

Record-Local Work Mentions

Work mentions matter because Authority should not stop at names alone. When a work chip appears on a line, it can open the filtered record list that produced the count, while Open in reader keeps the single preserved commentary record available.

Highlight Lexicon

Authority is now also present inside commentary reading itself. Author, work, and personaggio highlights let the text page begin to glow with the same line-first universe that the Authority route already knows.

Authority Atlas

The Authority universe is no longer one undifferentiated list. In Segni de l’antica fiamma, the author-side work data is mounted unevenly but honestly. Some rooms expose deeper works trees; others keep a lighter work overview. What matters is that the displayed route states its entry contract pressure instead of pretending every authority object has the same depth.

Mounted Work Layers

authors expose a real works-tree layer.

Commentary-Sensitive Entries

authors still require commentary-sensitive staging even though their work layer is available.

Special-Case Contracts

authors still keep a stricter special-case entry contract inside the authority universe.

Ready Universe

authors enter as ready objects across the authority layer, even when their entry contracts are not identical.

Personaggi

Authority no longer ends with authors. Some tracked authors also stand inside the poem as real dramatic figures, and some figure-lanes deserve direct character-space instead of being forced back into autore intake.

Segni de l’antica fiamma recognises Autore-Personaggio entries and standalone personaggi.

How To Enter It

There are now three honest scopes. Line begins from the selected verse and the commentary records that touch it. Canto Map widens to the full canto and shows where authority signals gather. Full Authority Page opens the larger author or personaggio room when you need the whole object.

That plurality is important because authority use does not arrive in only one scholarly form. Sometimes you start from a cited name, sometimes from a figure in the poem, sometimes from a work chip such as Vita Nuova or Convivio, and sometimes from one preserved commentary record opened in the reader.

Line Scope

Line scope keeps the selected verse still. Work chips open filtered record lists inside the Authority module, and Open in reader opens a single commentary record without moving the main entry away from the line.

Author Entry

Readiness no longer depends on pretending every author has the same structure. Some enter through the same works-tree structure but still preserve different entry contracts, especially where author/personaggio pressure or commentary-sensitive scope must remain explicit.

Commentary Highlights

Authority highlights now keep authority-reading close to the page. This matters because the Authority universe should not live only in a side panel; it should also become visible where the commentary language itself starts invoking it.

Object Types

The layer no longer treats shallowness as the main distinction. The major live distinction is between local line evidence, canto-wide distribution, and larger rooms whose reading contract still needs to say how much text, commentary, work, or personaggio evidence is mounted.

Mature Structures

Authors such as Aristotle, Paul, Augustine, Virgil, Ovid, or Cicero already support deeper drilldown, pressure/frontline metadata, and more explicit entry contracts.

Scoped Rooms

Some rooms still need scoped reading discipline even after work data is available. This is most visible where commentary pressure, role pressure, or double identity should remain explicit rather than being flattened into an ordinary browse tree.

Still Uneven

The point is not to suppress internal unevenness but to state clearly where the remaining difference now lives. In Segni de l’antica fiamma it lives less in a simple works-tree yes/no, and more in entry contract, scoped caveat, and reading pressure.

Boundaries

This page does not claim that every cited name is already solved. It claims something more useful: the layer now has enough scale, discipline, and entry logic to deserve a page of its own.

The next frontier is therefore not blind expansion. It is to keep thickening reading contracts, clickable line and canto routes, work-level drilldown, and commentary-integrated authority paths for the universe that already exists.

In other words, the design priority is not to hide unevenness but to keep it legible. Mature objects, thinner objects, and special-case objects should all remain readable as what they really are.
